Accommodating the Chief Justice | Inquirer Opinio -

Medical emergency has become the favorite refuge of those who would escape accountability. Medicine trumps the law so easily in our society because of the culture of “awa” (pity).  The Chief Justice used it to full effect in his testimony. After speaking for three hours, he claimed that he began to feel the signs of a lowering of his blood sugar: confusion and nausea. He said that was why he hurriedly left the courtroom before he could be properly discharged. It would have been easy to verify these claims by simply reviewing the video tapes. But, at that point, the senators were no longer in any mood to pursue the matter. Instead of reproaching him for the utter disrespect he showed for the court during his first appearance, the senator-judges accepted his apology without further question.

Compare this with the manner in which other witnesses, without exception, were bluntly interrupted when they kept on talking beyond the questions or could not give straight answers. They were subjected to withering lectures, and sharply reprimanded. Recall how the witness Harvey Keh cowered like a little boy and was almost reduced to tears when the imperious Miriam Defensor-Santiago took the floor to scold and insult him as if he had committed a heinous crime. Keh’s testimony was not even material to the case at hand. He had been summoned by the defense and qualified as hostile witness.

One is hard-pressed to understand what was going on in the minds of the senator-judges when, apart from one or two senators, they basically permitted Corona’s testimony to go unchallenged, graciously discharging him when he said he was no longer feeling well.

Justice weeps -

“Renato Corona is a liar.”

It is not a particularly damning sentence, attached to any other name. It is an easy enough statement. “Mo Twister is a liar.” “Rhian Ramos is a liar.” “Nadia Montenegro is a liar.” “Annabelle Rama is a liar,” and so are the shamefaced men confronted by their shrieking lovers in TV5’s “Face to Face.” Ali Atienza said it, and charged Mayor Alfredo Lim with libel after Manila’s Dirty Harry called the son of the environment secretary a drug addict. Mon Tulfo continues to say it in the same sentence as the names Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago. Everyone lies, and the lying and fibbing and all varieties of narrative gymnastics barely make a ripple in the national consciousness.

To call the Chief Justice of the Republic of the Philippines a liar is an altogether different statement. The Aquinos and Arroyos and Estradas can be burned in effigy to the sound of several hundred leftists howling about hypocrisy and deceit, but never the Chief Justice. The poor deluded schmuck who writes it, the newspaper that prints it, the network that airs it, all of them become guilty of swaying their collective behinds in front of the sanctified pillars of the Halls of Justice, a metaphorical mooning that has no other conclusion than libel charges announced by a properly grim Midas Marquez.

And still, “Renato Corona is a liar,” and to listen to him speak is all that is necessary to see it. The ease is what is terrifying.

Will P1 million fit in your palm? -

What amazes me is how bank notes or paper money in our wallets gain their value. These are not convertible into precious metals anymore, so what is their true value? When we use a credit card to buy something online, we can see how we have come a long way from barter, to shells, to gold and silver, to paper, and now plastic. When does money really become money? Or, to paraphrase the question on how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, will P1 million fit in your palm?

Argument against fiat money right there.

Corona’s ‘moro-moro’ at the Senate -

The symptoms of hypoglycemia are a slight blurring of vision, which makes the patient blink, and slowness of speech and movement. When he walked out, Corona’s eyes were blazing, not blinking, and he moved fast. The Senate security detail almost missed him. He wasn’t gasping for breath, either, as Cuevas averred. In fact, his voice and breathing were normal during his very long speech.

When he was caught and brought back in a wheelchair, he was meek as a lamb, looking down at his hands as if he were afraid to look anyone straight in the eye.

Hypoglycemia is easily corrected by a glass of regular Coke, or a spoonful of sugar, or a piece of candy. That immediately elevates one’s blood sugar. Corona doesn’t need confinement at the ICU where he would be incommunicado to those who want to see him and examine him.

The doctors also said Corona had to be confined for at least 48 hours because he already had two heart bypasses, is diabetic, and has kidney disease. More bull!

Just because somebody has a heart bypass doesn’t mean he has to be confined at the ICU when he is called to testify in court. I also had two heart bypass surgeries, have a heart pacemaker, am also diabetic, suffer from total kidney failure and have to be dialyzed three times a week, but I am not confined in any ICU. I live a normal, though stressful, life. But of course I am not hiding any secret dollar bank accounts.

With doctors ruling out Corona’s discharge from the hospital within 48 hours, it is likely that he would not again appear at the Senate impeachment court today, the deadline given by Enrile for him to resume his testimony. Enrile warned that if Corona doesn’t show up, he would order his long speech, which serves as his defense testimony, stricken off the record and instruct the senator-judges to make their decision quickly based on the testimonies and evidence on record.

The betting now is whether or not Corona will show up at his trial in the Senate this afternoon. Or will he hide in Medical City?

As I see it, the Corona walkout last Tuesday was deliberate, not because of hypoglycemia, but a premeditated act to avoid being cross-examined by the prosecution. A witness telling the truth won’t be afraid of being cross-examined. So why is Corona afraid of it?
